SynBatt - ENLARGE

Interoperable production as an enabler for a data-driven battery value chain

Most battery production facilities worldwide are located in Asia, especially in China. New gigawatt-scale production sites are often built worldwide under the guidance of these Asian providers. German and European companies must be strengthened to participate in this growing market. Through innovations in digitalisation, Germany could create flexible, networked and adaptable battery production instead of relying on rigid manufacturing setups.

The ENLARGE project creates a new “meta-standard” that connects existing standards such as EPCIS, ISO/IEC 19987 and OPC UA and extends them with new elements to enable a standardised description of relevant parameters in battery cell manufacturing. Validated through three use cases along the battery value chain, the project supports companies in integrating and networking their systems, facilitates cross-manufacturer value creation and promotes data-driven circular economy. The results are integrable and offer partners turn-key solutions or fully flexible production options. These newly created unique selling points also enable smaller German companies to compete with large Asian turn-key providers.

EECC focuses in particular on the use case for creating a Battery Passport, which will become mandatory in the EU from 2026. The Battery Passport enables tracking of the entire lifecycle of a battery and thereby improves traceability and disposal of batteries. ENLARGE thus helps to facilitate implementation of the Battery Passport and to meet the associated requirements.
